SLOW ALCHEMY

NORWAY

photo: Jens Hamran

All artistic processes can be said to be a form of alchemy; we refine and transform an idea, something immaterial into something tangible, sensual and concrete. This exhibition embraces these slow-moving turns and processes; where not everything we find is gold, but still of significance.

Language and idea are never one to one. That is, what is expressed is often in a space where metaphors can be understood literally and where the literal can be understood as metaphor. The works in the exhibition exist in this undefined space. They are tangible sails and canvases on a wooden frame. They are also something else. When something is made or created, unexpected connections to the surrounding space arise. One could well say that everything depends on context, but one could also say that it is the inherent power or influence of a work or an object that changes its surroundings.

My starting point is painting and painting's expanded field of activity rooted in the abstract expressionist tradition. The works on sails are integrated into this and point further towards the possibilities of painting as performance, sculpture and kinetic art.

The sails can be used for sailing. They retain their original function after my processing even though they change their initial character. They touch on the idea of land art, but do not leave a permanent imprint on the landscape. It is monumental, but fleeting.

SURF PAINTINGS

VINSTRA, NORWAY

My practice is based on the expanded field of painting and is strongly rooted in the abstract expressionist painting tradition.

I have been interested in and worked with universal physical, mental and spiritual experiences as a central theme for many years. An archaeological and personal approach to one's own mind and body, with unreserved honesty at the same time as an observant distance.

Through an alternately intuitive and methodical process, I search for unexpected constellations, something that has not yet been made. Based on mythology, yoga and organic processes, I seek an expression that is different and yet recognizable on a deeper level. I constantly take this acquired visual vocabulary with me into new works, where it is transformed, given new meaning and where it opens up for interpretations.

The works on spinnakers and windsurf sails point further towards painting as both performance, sculpture and kinetic art. All the sails retain their original function after my processing, even if they change character.

MY WILD COMPANION

NORWAY

photo: Jens Hamran

Bodily experiences form the backdrop for this exhibition. With roots in the abstract expressionist painting tradition, my starting point is the world that opens up when we turn our gaze inward. A contemplative state is also movement.

While the physical body is at rest, the body's inner images come to light.

My wild companion consists of paintings and processed windsurf sails.

The paintings are site-bound and anchored on the wall, while the sails also have another dimension. They retain their original function even though they change character, although they still carry an expectation that it would be possible to sail with them if necessary.
