“Sail away with me” - an ongoing extended painting project started in 2019.
“The Sail away with me” project started with an old windsurf sail used by my father and myself in the early 80s. When he died I turned to it as a way of processing grief; drawing on a medium which entailed both the fleeting moments of sailing itself and the good memories attached to it. Surfing and sailing can obviously be metaphors for life itself with the mastering of different techniques, weather conditions and unforeseen situations as well as our fundamental need for a sense of freedom. As the years go by this project is veering into new territories and consequently new meanings. It is painting which trancends the need for a white cube and traditional gallery spaces, also bordering on performance, kinetic art and works from the sixties. The references continue to multiply.
All the sails have a background story as they are bought second -hand. Other stories and other lives are also a part of these sails “Sail away with me” which was shown at the National museum in Oslo has had quite a journey ; The sail is from a 5.5 Metre class boat built in Perth, Australia. It was shipped to Norway by JS Horn. He sailed numerous regattas and World Championships with it in Norway and around the world. I bought the spinnaker second hand from him in 2019.
